      Hi,

Nice to talk to you this morning. I got to keep this short unfortunately, as my editor’s just asked me for an article on Dr Who for 5 this afternoon, which is tight.

So, Earth formed at same time as the other planets and the Sun from a cloud of dust and gas in space. This gradually shrunk because of gravity.

Most of the gas and dust became the sun, which gradually got hotter and hotter, because of the pressure, until suddenly nuclear fusion started and it began to give off light and heat.

When something that’s spinning gets smaller it spins faster, (Think of an ice skater pulling her arms in), so not all of the gas and dust became part of the sun.

Some of it was whizzing round so fast it stayed out of the sun and grew into lumps, then rocks, then bigger rocks, then asteroids and planets.

      Earth was one of these.

There’s quite a good article on it here:

      Hope that helps.

Big bang of a nuclear-type explosion with lots of gases that eventually made rock and the earth.
