There are bacterial mutants and animal mutants – but I don’t think that’s what you mean is it?

A mutation is the name for a change in the DNA sequence of any living thing. Mutations are caused by things like UV rays, or certain chamicals. It is events like mutations that allow new species to evolve out of old ones, so in a way we are all mutants. But because the sequence of most living things is very long and only a portion of it is needed by the living thing most of the time a lot of mutations that occur don’t have any effect on the living thing. But then there are certain points in the DNA sequence that are very important and when a mutation occurs there it can cause a lot of problems such as cancer.

there are lots of people and animals which have genetic mutations (you and I probably have some) but there aren’t mutants oozing green slime and trying to take over the world like in the movies.

Genetic mutations are very real, in fact nearly every single person on the Earth has some kind of mutation in their genetic make-up, but it is usually very minor and doesn’t tend to lead to the powers we see on films like X-Men. It would be fun if that was the case!
