The opportunity – the money would be good to do something useful with, I’m sure, but there aren’t many opportunities liek this to talk to all of you lot about really interesting stuff. I think I’m going to learn a lot too.

I’m in it mostly cos I like talking to young people about science. After I left industry I was a physics teacher for a while before becoming a writer and journalist. I loved it. But I started getting too many writing jobs and couldn’t keep doing both. I’ve always tutored schoolkids for exams and I’ve a website called Real Science which brings scientists and schools together. (My least favourite thing about science is copying out of books too.)

Definitely the opportunity. I didn’t even realise there was a prize when I signed up. It would be good to use the money to promote my work and teach others, but it was the chance to speak to students about my work that got me interested. I regularly take part in other events at schools and do careers talks but because I am busy with work it is hard to get out into the schools, so dong something like this on my computer is brilliant. I hope you guys enjoy it too!
