Probably not, unfortunately, because I’d love it to be. Loch Ness is huge, deep and cold – hundreds of feet deep in places.

The water is pretty murky and there’s more of it than any other loch in Britain. In fact it has more water than all the lakes in England and Wales put together.

So there could be a small population of some kind of sea animal living there from long ago.

Science says it’s not likely though, because In 2003 the BBC sponsored a search of the Loch using sonar and satellite tracking.

The search was sharp enough to pick up a small buoy, they said, but no big animal was found. The scientists said afterwards that this pretty much proved the Loch Ness monster was a myth.

Shame really. Science doesn’t always give you the answer you want.

If it does exist it does a really good job of hiding! People have been searching for it for years and although there have been ‘claims’ of sightings, I’m sceptical. This ‘myth’ demonstrates very well how in science it’s easy to prove something exists, but not so easy to be sure it doesn’t. Until there’s ultimate proof (which unless you drain the loch, there won’t be) we’ll never be sure – so don’t go too near the edge!
