I wanted to know how the brain works. and I wanted a job with lots of freedom and scope for asking independent questions.

I read a book called the Body Farm by Patricia Cornwell and that got me into Forensic Science. But a chemistry set my parents got me for Christmas when I was 12 got me hooked on chemistry.

As a doctor you can help a few people – the ones you meet. As a scientist you can help very many more – even though you probably can’t meet them all.

I always enjoyed biology at school, so I did biology at university, one of the professors running one of the modules I took got me interested in plants and suggested I do a PhD so I did and then I saw the advert for my current job just as I was finishing my PhD and thought it would be a good job for me so I applied for it.

I kept asking why, when I was young, which annoyed people a bit. I wanted to understand how the world worked.

Physics turned me on cos you don’t have to remember lots of facts and names, but with just a few ideas you can work loads of stuff out.

Then I found a book called The Marvels and Mysteries of the Universe in the attic of my aunt’s house. It was a thick book with glossy, black and white photos of stars and unbelievably huge galaxies. That blew me away.
