I suppose I’m part clinical scientist (finding new treatments to use on patients) as I come from a medical background, and part microbiologist as I’m mostly researching bacteria at the moment.

A molecular biologist or a plant geneticist, or more generically a biologist. Science is a very subdivided topic, each of us knows what we work on very well, but not more then a basic understanding of topics that you may consider not too far away from what we do. So I can tell you about the genetics of plants and how we can manipulate the genome to make crops pest and disease resistant, but I can’t tell you about latin names or phylogenetics (the science name for the tree of life) of plants, because I haven’t studied it.
