I don’t think I can list one experiment. One of the best was one my PhD student has just finished, because we made a prediction and after weeks of data collection and analysis, the experiment worked and the data showed exactly what we predicted. So it was great to have a success like that, and for my student to get good data.
There’s a cool bacteria that lives in the oceans – it makes light, like a torch. We’ve taken the gene that makes light and put it into bacteria. We can now try antibiotics out on bacteria by measuring the amount of light they produce – the less light, the less they are using the genes that cause disease and the better we get at stopping them!
When I was at university we set up a chemistry experiment to distil alcohol from potatoes. We ended up making vodka, that was pretty cool. I do lots of experiments for my job and they are always fun, I’ve made my own fireworks before (do not try this at home).
I don’t think there is one specific experiment that I think of as the best. For me each experiment is just part of the steps required to see the bigger picture, like how we can stop little worms from eating banana plant roots for example.
