My job is ‘Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Nottingham’. I spend about 50% of my time teaching psychology to undergraduate students at university, and the other 50% doing scientific research. I studied science subjects at A-level, then I studied Psychology as an undergraduate, then I did a PhD in neuroscience. To get a job like this, you need a PhD and also a few years experience working as a scientist.

My official title is Research Fellow, which you have to have a PhD to be. My role is as a molecular biologist, which means I use lots of tools developed over the last 50 years to modify the genetics of plants, and to be one of those you have to do your PhD on a project that involves using these tools, mine was determining the genetic pathways that cause plants to release pollen. To get a PhD you need to get a degree from a university in a related subject, mine was in Biology and you need to get a 2:1 or higher (or you can do a masters course before the PhD). To get to university you need to get good A level results (if they still exist!) in subjects related to what you want to do. To get to do A levels you need to do well at your GCSEs. A general qualification that is required to do any job properly is hard work!

I am a Higher Scientific Officer. This means I do scientific and technical project management and scientific research for the government. To so this you need to have good GCSE’s and A-levels in order to do a degree at University. The degree needs to be in science but we take people will lots of different types of science degrees like chemistry, biology and physics. We even have some engineers.
