science lets you get at things that are true (as far as we can tell) and new. So I think it is our best way of understanding how the world works.

For me science is constantly developing – like a book that never ends! That way you can never get bored. This is important to me because I think it is important for you guys to appreciate how great science can be so that you can work hard and be able to do what you want. Too many gifted people wish they worked more at school so that they could do the job that they (later) wanted.

I’m inquisitive by nature. As a kid I was always asking questions, I wanted to know how things worked and why things existed in the way they did. Science is about gathering knowledge about the world and it is through science that I began to get the answers to all my questions. I then realised I could start to find answers myself and before I knew it I was a scientist. I liked learning about the Romans in History lessons and I enjoyed reading stories and learning about literature in English class but those studies didn’t answer my questions so I preferred Science lessons, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. When you think about it, some things in Geography are science too. I enjoyed learning about plate tectonics because I wanted to know how earth quakes and volcanoes occurred. I’m also a bit OCD and I like organising and condensing things and I like testable laws and theories. With a chemical reaction you can work out what the products will be and I like that I can work it out.
